About the project

not knot naught, the newest work by Deanna Peters/Mutable Subject, introduces a dynamic blend of research-creation within a trio framework, promoting connection among artists from diverse backgrounds. With collaborating performers Sevrin Emnacen and Luciana D’Anunciação, Deanna continues to centre artists who are underserved and underrepresented by mainstream contemporary dance. Sevrin is an experimental b.boy and Luciana comes from a performance art/visual arts background. What brings us together is a passion for club and other social dances.

Set within a low-tech, DIY environment, not knot naught explores possibility, permutation and limits within a container of postmodern, club and contemporary dance aesthetics. The performers work through group tasks involving complex patterns and co-devised games. We’re building a perpetual motion machine, recalling as many movements as we can.

Musician Ahmed Khalil is training us to operate and generate sound live, in situ, on various portable music devices. Deanna's mentor, House Dance pioneer Sekou Heru, supports as outside eye, guiding us in using our bodies to measure our movements, as well as the spaces we're moving in. Additional support and guidance comes from dance artists Helen Walkley, Victor Tran and Jeanette Kotowich.

Building on research from summer 2023, the next phase of creation runs January–April 2024, with plans to present our research-to-date in 2024.

About Deanna

Deanna Peters/Mutable Subject creates, performs and DIY produces for the stage, club, gallery and web. Deanna’s called 'Mutable Subject' because they’re always moving and evolving in their 21 year career. As a creator of “eye-popping” and “deeply moving” dance works, Deanna’s known for pushing the boundaries of the form.

"not knot naught is motivated by my most recent solo choreography Homing, which combined two scores that kept me moving during the pandemic: 10 things 100 times and touching edges in space. I’m curious about what impels and inspires us to move and create. I’m also in search of 'pure dance', choreography that’s not tied to meaning-making or story."
